OPEN LETTER from BETH SHEPARD

OPEN LETTER from BETH SHEPARD
Beth Shepard (WHS 1987, kindergartner's parent)
An Open Letter from Beth Shepard:

I was born and raised in Wheatland, Wyoming as was my father and both of my grandparents. I have always been proud to call Wheatland my hometown. When I became a parent I could think of no other place I would want to raise my son. I now question my decision. I do not want to raise my son in an environment where any kind of prejudice will be openly tolerated. School, like ones home, should be a safe place for kids to explore their individuality and have that individuality nurtured.

The Platte County School board’s decision to remove the No Place for Hate banners from our schools has effectively nurtured an environment of hostility not only within our schools, but also within our community. The members of the board have in essence told the entire community, if you are not like me or think like me you are a lesser human being. How does that translate to the rest of the region and the rest of the country?

Our School district is losing families to other communities like it in Colorado and Wyoming. When a new company comes into our town do you think they are looking for a community that openly accepts intolerance? What about new families moving in or even keeping families here? Did you think of these consequences when you made your decision?

The larger problem is the board completely disregarded the work and effort of the staff and students of West Elementary and Wheatland High School. The banners are a badge of honor that these schools can wear with pride. In order to receive a banner the students and staff of each school have to spend a year completing a checklist and ensure that the school’s community is working to combat hatred and abuse among the students. These students worked hard on this program and are very proud of what they have achieved over the last year. Only 25 schools were funded for this program and Wheatland, a community of 3300 people, had 2 schools in the program.

Our school board, instead of commending the students’ hard work, slammed it in their faces. The board is an entity that should be encouraging educational growth. These bright and ambitious children are going to go to college and become amazing adults who will not wish to come back to Wheatland to share their knowledge and talents. Other communities will prosper from the best and brightest Wheatland has to offer. Shame on you, PCSD #1, for negating all that these kids have accomplished and making Wheatland all the poorer with your decision.

The Anti-Defamation League, whose motto is “to stop the defamation of Jewish people…To secure justice for all,” has no subversive intent. The message of the program is clear, NO PLACE FOR HATE. By focusing on one of the many sponsors of this program the board has illustrated exactly why this program is so desperately needed in our community.

You better find a new town Jack.  Homosexuality is not going to go away no matter where you live!

If Kelly is bent on removing advertising from the schools then they better start clearing the gym and football field!  Where would school sports be without community and business sponsorship?

"What about new families moving in or even keeping families here?"

Some may want to move there BECAUSE they do not appreciate the homosexual agenda and would like to live somewhere that does not support it.

A LOT of people do not agree with you Beth.

Stay strong school board and good on the MS school board too.

Wheatland School Board is a joke:
They lost their reputations and link to 2010 because of a flippin' LOGO. At least progressive Mississippi had a REAL LESBIAN with a REAL LESBIAN DATE to flip out about. Wheatland is finally behind Mississippi. Enough said. What's going on at the next school board? Did the Fab Four "win"? No banners? No more full meetings? Guess what school board and Stuart, you didn't win. You made a joke out of WHS and lost the respect of many people in Wheatland, and in Wyoming. And people don't forget. They get complacent, but they don't forget.
If anyone is organizing anything for this coming up school board meeting, please let people know. It would be a great show of support and tenacity if as many people showed up for this Monday's meeting as last, and made them listen to a whole additional 30 minutes of public comment from the public they purport to be representing. Watch Tyson squirm and Fabian smirk. Listen to the students speak. Listen to the voters speak. I'm sure there are poeple who will show up if they know there's something going on.

Look:
Check out the news! Headlines read, " School Axes Prom After Lesbian Date Request". Ha, Ha, I love it, their school board thinks along the same lines as ours does. Jackson, Miss. is were this took place. "Good Job", To the school board in Jackson, Miss as well as ours.

Was it Kelly Tyson who said he wanted all advertising removed from the schools because he didn't want Wheatland kids seeing advetising of any kind? What kind of comment could you make to that comment? Would you make it in the cafeteria in front of the Pizza Hut sales or in front of the Minute Maid machine? Would Kelly say the Wizard of Oz brochure should have no ads? No advertising in the newspaper? Kelly Tyson's comments were a thinly veiled attempt to diffuse the attention away from what Dunham and Fabian said, because Tyson likely saw that what the media was hearing was going to come back swiftly and hard in the seat of the school board's Carharts. And so it has. And so it has. Read the editor's oped piece in the PCRT. Amber N. went out on a limb. Don't leave her hanging. She encouraged the kids to be loud about this and I agree.

Wheatland is a great town!  And the people there would give you the shirt off your back... whether you be black, white, gay, straight, Christian, or Muslim.  I grew up there... and graduated from there... I know of what I speak.  Wheatland is an accepting town.  These 4 board members do not represent the majority in Wheatland.  They represent an era of ideals long gone.  That's quite evident by the backlash here and on other blogs, websites, and social networking sites... especially the response from residents and past residents.  These people are letting the world know that they are upset that their hometown, Wheatland, is being painted as a place of hate.  Good for you Wheatland!!  Stand up for what is ethically right!!  And thank you Beth... for speaking what so many past and present residents feel!!  I seriously hope you consider a spot on the board... you ARE the breath of fresh air they need!!!

AMEN to Beth!!!! Thank you for speaking up not just for yourself but for all of us who believe the board was wrong. I would have thought they'd been thinking outside the box for our childrens' future. They must not be as open-minded as we thought. When election time comes, Platte County will know who NOT to vote for.

Great letter. I signed the petition. Bet you'll be the topic of Wheatland Inn for quite a while. There's actually support talk for the banners there. Thanks for taking a stand.

Beth, you're absolutely right about other communities prospering with Wheatland graduates. Look how many of them live in Cheyenne, Casper, Laramie, and Colorado. Wheatland could be much more prosperous, with plenty of successful businesses and residents, but not if those with attitudes like the Fab 4 run the town. Such wasted potential is sad indeed.

A Teacher:
You're right Beth. And you have my vote for school board too. WHS is no worse, but it is no better than other schools today when it comes to bullying and intimidation. I wholeheartedly agree with Denise Hudson, who reminds us that it is not "tolerance" we should strive for, but "acceptance" for every human being. My hope is that such acceptance is the result of all this turmoil, and that your son will grow up in the kind of place that Wheatland can be. We can be far better than this!

Beth, Wheatland is blessed and fortunate to have you and your as a part of the community. What a beautiful sentiment and sharing. You have my vote for school board if you would run. You are the change that Wheatland needs.
